Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.

On Jan. 24, 2022 my brave mother passed away at the tender age of 93, a victim of COVID-19 (she was fully vaccinated). In remembrance of her unique life, this page was created to honor that life. She is gone, but she left us smiling.

Her life began on a humble farm half a world away (Romania), and ended after living a life in which she was almost universally liked and admired. She survived World War 2, and emigrated to America with her parents after becoming aged to a German boy, Ulrich Fechner. Her father Nicholas had grown up in St. Louis, but returned to Europe (Romania) after World War 1 because his parents yearned to return to farm life over there. They fled the Russians in 1944, and found their way to the American lines in Austria near Vienna. Her father served as translator for an American officer (Maj. James Hardin) and in return Caroline and her parents were granted entrance to Germany, where she eventually met her life partner, Ulrich Fechner, a German from what at the time was Prussia.

After emigrating to America and marrying Ulrich in 1951, she raised 3 children who turned out reasonably well. She lived for 93 years and was married to Ulrich for 71 years. In her last decade of life she was crippled with arthritis and chronic pain from an operation to fuse her spine after it fractured. Those last years were a testament to true love and faithfulness, as husband Ulrich was forced to spend almost every moment with her, as she was virtually helpless
