If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.
— Albert Einstein

My name is Walter Fechner and I am an American physicist, photographer and composer. I am mostly retired from a physics career, primarily in industry. Upon reflection, I was disappointed that much effort by colleagues, a lot of it unpublished, went unrecognized or unfulfilled in the end. Sometimes the goal was too difficult (fusion), or the contracts were cancelled, or the software was inevitably superseded or else blurred by mergers and acquisitions. Many beautiful ideas were hidden under the hood in the creation of complicated technology.

So technology in some sense could be considered unfulfilling in the end. But our society recognizes another human endeavor which greatly influences our appreciation of our world. We call it art. I decided to have a little fun switching from the art of technology to more traditional artistic expressions of beauty. Technology changes, but the beauty of art survives.

Artful Scholar features traditional artistic creations by science and technology professionals, while eventually exploring whether the beauty of the individual human soul and the beauty of technology are related. For now, my photography is featured on the companion website https://www.nature so lovely.com. This website features my music.

The music on this website is all original, dreamed up in moments of inspiration and played by computer (for now) so other people could hear it too . It is called “Music For Mature Souls” , a collection of 120 or so on one or more synthesized classical instruments. The music is generated in software called MuseScore. It is geared toward easy listening. It’s a crazy idea, but a reasonable solution if you don’t have an orchestra or band at your disposal.

We can probably agree that the world needs more beauty right now. I hope this music helps some people toward that goal.
